K-9 "Chip" - Beglian Malinois
We would like to introduce you to the newest addition to the Kronenwetter Police Department, K-9 "Chip". "Chip" was born in June 2008 at a Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico breeder where he received his basic training. He was then imported by the Little Rock K-9 Academy where he and Officer Lopes-Serrao trained together and were certified by the National Narcotic Detecting Dog Association (N.N.D.D.A.) for narcotics detection and patrol work. The K-9 team began patrolling together in late February 2010. Thank you to our sponsors, look below!!
To Help Sponsor The K-9 Unit
The grant helped us cover the large costs associated with starting a K-9 unit, but does not cover the maintenance costs we will incur with the unit for dog food, vet care, etc. If there are any businesses or residents that would like to donate to the unit, we would greatly appreciate your support. You can mail a check to the Kronenwetter PD "Attn Canine Unit". If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting with our unit please contact Officer Luis Lopes-Serrao by e-mail or at 715.693.4215 x 26.

The Kronenwetter Police Department found an available grant through the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance for agencies to create an innovative law enforcement program. Because of an increase in drug related property crimes in the past few years, we felt that a police K-9 unit would best serve our citizens. We were approved for the grant and were awarded nearly $15,000 to aquire a dog, attend training and purchase some necessary equipment for the unit. Around the same time, we were approved for a traffic safety award for $4,000 which helped us purchase equipment for the K-9 unit patrol car.
One of the biggest functions of the canine unit will be the detection and seizure of illegal narcotics. In just over four years of service the police department has been able to seize large quantities of marijuana as well as cocaine, ecstasy, methamphetamines, psilocybin mushrooms, heroin and others. There is no doubt that the addition of the canine unit will only enhance these efforts and will not only benefit our community but the Wausau Metropolitan Area as a whole.
The police department also looks forward to being able to bring the dog to area schools for demonstrations as well as doing locker "sniffs". Our goal is to not only seize illegal narcotics from our streets but also work in preventing our youth from experimenting in them.
